One of the fundamental math problems for the 2026 NMT has sparked lively discussions on social media. Tutor Ms. Alisa demonstrated basic examples that applicants are expected to solve during the exam. Among these are tasks involving finding the root of an equation.
The educator shared this on Threads.
Ms. Alisa noted that such examples represent the simplest tasks on the exam, which schoolchildren should be able to solve without difficulty. However, the educator emphasized that while the questions themselves are not complex, stress and unfamiliar testing conditions can make it hard to cope even with them.
“Besides such simple ones, there are, of course, more complex ones involving geometric figures, logarithms, etc. But some children are psychologically unprepared for exams, and some have not studied for various reasons and simply click randomly, so we have what we have,” Ms. Alisa stated.

In the comments, social media users shared various opinions. Some expressed astonishment at how applicants could fail to handle such basic tasks. Others stressed that parents should pay more attention to their children’s educational level, as with proper schooling, achieving a passing score is quite feasible.
Ukrainians also joked that over time, the NMT might consist only of elementary tasks if graduates are unable to solve more complex problems.
Some commentators noted that modern schoolchildren would find it challenging to pass the former external independent evaluation.

“Introduction to exponents/powers – 5th grade, learning properties, etc. – 6th-8th grade.”
-
“This is a 7th-grade problem where they learn exponents. What number needs to be multiplied by 2 to get 16? Well, probably 8. And to what power must 2 be raised to get 8? Well, probably 3.”
-
“You can even solve this just by substituting the options.”
-
“It’s truly awful. I read comments about the NMT, and tutors write that children don’t know basic concepts at all. Soon they’ll reach the point where they put the multiplication table as a task on the NMT, and even then, they’ll say it’s too difficult.”
-
“I no longer know what to do or write to make people pay attention to the level of education! So they understand that the NMT math isn’t that scary, that it’s easy to get a passing score because there are these easy tasks, and there are formulas in the reference materials.”

Incidentally, Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi categorically rejected the possibility of canceling mandatory mathematics and the history of Ukraine in the NMT, emphasizing that these subjects are fundamental for applicants. He described myths about the test’s excessive complexity as attempts to discourage applicants, noting that the knowledge threshold is accessible and the number of those who do not overcome it is low. The minister also pointed out that university admission is a voluntary choice and reminded about the alternative of quality vocational education, which is no less promising.
